Story :

Maneejan (Florence Vanida) is a Paris-based archive specialist. A mysterious French work is brought to her for interpretation at the Thai consulate in Paris. She realizes the document is Voyageur, written by French naturalist Francois Xavier about Siam in the mid 19th century. Maneejan is moved by the record’s allusions to Siam’s shadowy past. When she returns to Thailand, she finds herself in a half-dream state, witnessing and experiencing her home country as it was more than a century ago, Siam as it struggled to defy outside influences to become a new civilization. Maneejan learns much about her country’s history, becomes a fighter alongside her cultural ancestors, and finds valuable lessons in life and love along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie with food for thought message

First I was not sure whether to get this DVD since it has 2 bad comment and 1 good, but decided to take a chance.
I watched it on my Pc first finding subtitle goes on & off, which was annoying. I can speak Thai & English but lousy at French, hence I needs the subtitle to be on so I can understand French.
After watching the film, the time travel back and fro was abit confused, but I managed to follows the film. This film is not about Anna Leowen which was deleted, possibly avoiding misunderstanding and wished it was included in the final.
This film was made for Thai people to see what they are facing when 2 world superpowers at that period being Great Britain & France are on our doorstep threading to colonized the country. She found Thai people was united, ready to fight to protect their land. She found warmth and something her and modern Thai people had lost. As I watch I felt the same, lots of pride and felt who we are were lost in today as Thailand is modernising and westernised. Seeing King Chulalunkorn (Rama 5th) signing treaty which we lost Khmer, Laos, and Malaysia penisular to British & France. That's somehow bring me to tears. The historical is correct, being son of history teacher and this film maker did research, even found people look alike real historical ones.
If you not Thai, you're probably don't see it, if you're Thai please watch this and try to see what the character in the film saw.
Would like to thank this production for let me see what being Thai (Siamese) all about.

3 out of 5 stars Political Correctness

The DVD contains several deleted scenes involving Anna Leownes (a real person made infamous to Thai people in The King & I) which I believe were removed to prevent offence. The young actress, Gill Tysoe, aside from being strikingly beautiful (I would marry her now!), plays the character with much intrigue in her and I wish that these charming scenes had remained in the final cut to provide more dpeth to a generally competent film.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment

Beautiful cinematography, props, costume. Poor acting especially by the main character. Florence Vanida is lovely to watch, as a model, but horrible as an actress. She only has one or two facial expression. She can't act and can hardly speak Thai, which is very annoying. Also poor casting...how can someone looking like her (obviously half Europian, be a daughter of someone looking like Nirut (chinese looking) and the woman who played her mom in the movie (looking very thai and chinese).
This movie has a very very poor script. They took a very good book and messed it up with a very bad screenplay and poor dialogue....also confusing all the story lines. In the book, an antique mirror is a vessel that transports Manee to the past. In the movie, she just walks from one room to another and time shifts. The movie is also too melodramatic at times with sappy soundtracks. There are several unneeded scenes that could have been cut and make the movie tighter or the time more well spent giving more background of the story.
Overall a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE

This movie can be kind of confusing if you're not really familiar with the story line, but it's still a pretty good movie over all. I love the graphics and different scenes when the main girl in the movie travels back in time. It makes the viewer feel like they're traveling with her. The main guy in this movie is really hot. Now I have to keep my eyes out for whatever other movies he may be in. Definitely recommend to watch.
