Story :

ก่อนวันประกาศอิสรภาพของ สมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราชนั้น พระเจ้าบุเรงนอง วางอุบายหมายลอบปลงพระชนม์ ซึ่งยังความโทมนัสให้แก่สมเด็จพระนเรศวรอย่างมาก เมื่อจาตุรงคบาทนักรบประกบฝีเท้าช้างคนหนึ่งต้องพลีชีพเพื่อพระองค์ในกาลนี้ เสมา ลูกชายช่างตีดาบ ซึ่งเดินทางกลับจากเรียนวิชาดาบกับ อาจารย์ขุน เข้าประลองแข่งขันในการหาจาตุรงคบาทคนใหม่ ด้วยความที่เขามีฝีมือดาบอันโดดเด่น จึงได้รับตำแหน่งครูฝึกทหารในเรือน ขุนราม แต่นั่นถือเป็นการหยามศักดิ์ศรีของ หมู่ขัน นายทหารเอกของกรุงศรี ที่ติดภาระต้องไปประจำการที่ด่านหน้า เขาไม่พอใจในตัวลูกช่างตีดาบคนนี้มาก และรอวันที่จะได้ตัดสินกันอย่างแท้จริง

Will True Love Prevail?

A tale of poor boy (Sema) and rich girl who fall in love, but the girls father has another suitor in mind for his daughter. Will true love prevail in the end?

Sounds corny, but it isn't.

While this love story is being played out there is a war going on. Should Sema stay and help his father with the family business so he can keep up the payments on the loan and thus prevent his sister being forced into bondage? Or should he join the army and make a name for himself?

Unless you are a student of Thai history, the war can be a bit confusing and I have to admit to being unsure who was fighting whom. There is a short forward where some attempt is made to explain the historical background, but blink and you'll miss it. I kept wondering who the good guys were. Answer, the side that the hero is fighting for!

The film is at times rather episodic. A scene is set, something happens, you expect more to happen, but suddenly the whole thing changes. The subtitles sometimes flash on and off again a bit quick, too. This makes following a conversation difficult if you don't speak Thai!

On the whole, an enjoyable film. The lovers are sweet, the battle scenes epic, the comedy moments funny(ish!) and our hero's rival in love suitably villainous!.
