Story :

Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) and Paro (Aishwarya Rai) are childhood sweethearts. Their love is doomed from the beginning because Devdas is the son of a wealthy aristocrat while Paro’s family is way down in the social scale. Devdas’ father sends him abroad to study, hoping that the separation will be permanent. When he returns, his love is undimmed and when Paro’s mother (Kiron Kher)proposes that the two be united in marriage, she is humiliated and rebuffed by Devdas’ father. In despair, Paro offers to give herself, body and soul, to her lover, but he is caught in the trap of convention – and he rejects her. Too late, he comes to realize how much he has lost, because Paro now marries someone else. Devdas seeks refuge in alcohol and in the arms of a prostitute, Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). She falls in love with him, but he is unable to forget Paro.

เดฟดาส เป็นชายหนุ่มที่เกิดในตระกูลร่ำรวย เขาเป็นบุตรของ ซามินดาร์ นารายัน มุกเฮอร์จี ผู้ทรงอิทธิพลของชุมชน ในวัยเด็ก เดฟดาส ใช้ชีวิตวิ่งเล่นอยู่ในชนบท และด้วยความที่เขาเป็นเด็กพูดน้อยประกอบกับการดูแลจากคนรอบข้าง ทำให้ เดฟดาส มีเพียงทุ่งหญ้าและขุนเขาที่เป็นเพื่อนเล่น แต่เมื่อวันที่เขาได้รู้จักกับ พาร์วตี หรือ พาโร ของ เดฟดาส ..โลกของเขาก็แปรเปลี่ยนไป.... พาโร คือเด็กสาวในวัยเดียวกันกับ เดฟดาส เธอเป็นคนเดียวที่กล้าเข้ามาเล่นกับเขา ทั้งสองเล่นด้วยกัน อยู่ดูแลกันและห่วงใยซึ่งกันและกัน จนดูเหมือนว่าพวกเขาได้เรียนรู้ถึงความรักก่อนที่จะรู้จักถึงความหมายของคำว่ารักเสียอีก

และเมื่อถึงเวลา เดฟดาส ต้องเดินทางไปศึกษาต่อที่ประเทศอังกฤษ จนเวลาผ่านไป 10 ปี ในวันที่เขาเดินทางกลับมาและได้พบกับ พาโร อีกครั้งหนึ่ง การพบกันครั้งนี้ทำให้ เดฟดาส ได้รู้ถึงความหมายที่แท้จริง แห่งคำว่ารัก เดฟดาส ต้องการที่จะแต่งงานกับ พาโร เพื่อช่วยเหลือครอบครัวของเธอจากหนี้ก้อนโต แต่ ครอบครัวของเขาไม่ยอมรับการตัดสินใจนี้ .. เดฟดาส จึงต้องเลือกระหว่าง ความกตัญญูและความรัก และแล้วเพื่อทดแทนบุญคุณของครอบครัว
